Local Teen Founds Tennis Tournament to Benefit Domestic Violence Nonprofit

GEORGETOWN, TX – What started in 2018 as the creation of Georgetown High School Junior Michael Hoffa, has grown into an annual fundraiser benefiting Texas Advocacy Project.

Hoffa, a varsity athlete, spearheaded a tennis tournament called "The Berry Creek Open” through his participation in Teen Ambassadors of Hope − TAP’s campaign to empower teens and raise awareness about teen dating violence and healthy dating relationships − when he was challenged to create a fundraising and outreach plan.

Campaign goals of Teen Ambassadors are threefold: engage young leaders in raising awareness about dating violence; promote the Texas Advocacy Project’s mission and services; and raise needed funds. 60 participants like Michael drew from skills acquired during requisite trainings covering healthy relationships, online safety, and fundraising.  These young contributors also participated in a leadership training session led by Dr. Barry Bales, of the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.

The 1st annual Berry Creek Open slated for 6/28-6/30 will be “serving hope” to Texans in need of free legal services for domestic violence and sexual assault.  Divisions include singles and doubles for adults and juniors.  For more information, sponsorship opportunities, and to register to play please visit https://www.texasadvocacyproject.org/tennis.

Q&A with Michael Hoffa

What made you decide to get involved with Texas Advocacy Project as a Teen Ambassador of Hope?
“I learned about the program from my Mom and when I found out how much TAP does for people, it inspired me to want to be a part of making a difference.”

What skills are you hoping to gain through TAOH?
“I am learning about leadership, teamwork and effective communication which are all important skills, but the one thing that I think is most important is helping others.  Just one small act of kindness can change someone’s life.”

What inspired you create a tennis tournament as a fundraiser?
“My original idea was to do a mixed doubles tournament just for my friends.  This would give me the opportunity to share what I learned from our trainings, and donate their entrance fees.  As I was meeting with my coach to talk through my idea, he offered me the opportunity to work with him on a USTA tournament. I would be able to raise funds by getting sponsorships and donations.  I will also be manning an information table at the tournament when I’m not playing, so I can share what I have learned.”
